Note | This book is dedicated to the men of Alpha Company for their Courage, Support and Commitment. "Pain removes the veil, it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul". The Spartans of Combat Team Alpha Patrol bravely and fearlessly, pugilists of a modern era of combat. Armed not with the sword and shield, but equipped with weapons of the counterinsurgent, knowledge, respect, a penetrating resolve, compassion, and an enduring tolerance of the darker side of human nature. Bound together by mateship, loyalty and a deep commitment to their profession, there is neother adveristy nor hardship they have been unable to conquer together. In ancient Spartan days it was commonl y accepted that one Spartan was worth several men of any other army. In Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, these men have proven their equal to the ancient warriors whose namesake and ethos they have adopted. The new Spartans have demonstrated to the Afghan people that paradise does not only reside in the shadow of words. They have laid the seeds that will ultimately break through the tyranny of terroism and Islamic fundamentalism, ideologies that have stifled the development of this country for so long. Their efforts have provided the blanket of security essential for the establisment of lasting peace, stability and prosperity. Their mark and influence will resonate across the valleys of Oruzgan beyond their time. Theirs is truly a selfless service, wi th a legacy to indeed be proud of. Major David Trotter.--Foreword. |
