Note HMAS Sydney Insignia.--Front cover and title page. The horrific events of September 11 brought home the enormity of the evil in this world and it's determination to wreak havoc on all that we have worked so hard for. This book is dedicated to the memory of those lost and is reflective of our contribution to the war against terror. HMAS Sydney is the third of four FFG-7 class Guided Missile Frigates built for the Royal Australian Navy in Seattle, USA. She was commissioned on the 29th of January, 1983. The remaining two frigates, HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Newcastle were built in Australia. The concept of the class began in 1971 when the United States Navy initiated a programme to build fifty Patrol Frigates. The class was later redesignated as Guided Missle Frigates and was spearheaded by the USS Oliver Hazard Perry, commissioned o n the 17th of December, 1977. The RAN's first ship of the class was HMAS Adelaide commissioned on the 15th November, 1980, followed by HMAS Canberra commissioned on the 21st March, 1981. Sydney's role is to complement the fleet's ability to keep the worl d's sea lanes open and free and to provide protection for military and merchant convoys.
