Note Squadron Royal Air Force Insignia.--Front and back cover. With my parent's permission, I joined the RAAF on 9th October 1942, my eighteenth birthday. Some parents refused to let their boys sign up, but my mother knew I'd made up my mind from the age of sixteen and she didn't stand in my way. I headed down to the RAAF Russell Street recruitment building and lined up with hundreds of other new recruits. We were put through dozens of medical tests and aptitude tests, many of which we'd done in air cadets. Eventually I was chosen. Not everyone got through those early stages, so it was a relief to get through. I felt excited and lucky that my dream appeared to finally be coming true. General.
