Note Includes Bibliographical references. On 15th September 1999 a United Nations security council resolution authorised the establishment of a multinational force to restore peace and security in East Timor. Planning commenced in March 1999 and subsequently five United Nations Military liaison Officers deployed to East Timor in June 1999. The main-body of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) deployed in September of that year. All pesonnel from the New Zealand Battalion Group and the RNZAF Helicopter Detachment returned to New Zealand in Novemb er 2002 and all equipment was reconstituted by the end of March 2003. Following the extraction of NZDF rear parties in January 2003, 21 NZDF personnel remain in East Timor serving as UNMO, staff officers, or attached to the East Timor Defence Force as t raining advisors.
