Note Includes bibliographical references. The Sir John Monash Centre tells the remarkable story of Australia's men and women who served on the Western Front some 100 years ago. These men and women were ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances - fathers, brothers, sons, sisters and daughters who left families and friends to become citizen soldiers, nurses and voluneers answered the call to serve their country and take up arms in a protracted war a long way from home. By their conduct and the values of courage, commitment, selflessness, end urance and mateship they caught the imaginations of our people on the home front, and their actions helped create the Anzac tradition. This tradition remains an inheritance bequeathed to all Australians. It defines our national character and our commitm ent to Australia in all endeavours.
