In 1921, The Disabled Soldiers Pottery was set up under the auspices of the Australian Red Cross. Their premise was to give training and potential financial independence to mainly double amputee returned soldiers from the Great War. The men were transported to work in sidecars attached to motorcycles. Luncheon was provided at the cost of 6d (5c) each. They began making pottery in an old Kitchen in a building on the corner of Market and York Streets, Sydney. Initially only greenware was produced, then transported to Bakewell Bros Pottery kilns in Erskineville for firing and glazing. |
