Note | "The Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom (ANZUK) Force existed in Singapore and Malaysia from 1971 to 1974. This tri-national, tri-military force played a key part in providing stability in the region. "--Preface. National Library's NL copy signed by author. Includes bibliographical references and index. How did Australia, supported by New Zealand, become the lead nation in an off-shore, multinational, tri-service force with an integrated headquarters? A force that included accompanying dependants with full garrison support. This book records a comprehensive account of ANZUK and its precursor organisations, how it was formed, how it operated, and how it disintegrated. Emphasis is given to individual accounts and to the smaller units. When the United Kingdom withdrew its military forces from 'East of Suez' in 1971, the Australian and New Zealand governments decided to retain their military forces in Singapore. However, after a general election in the United Kingdom, the new government decided to leave a force in Singapore. Both Australia and New Zealand we re cautious about this concept and were reluctant to take a leading role in the 'Five Power Defence Arrangement'. The book explains how the ANZ Force became the ANZUK Force. It has been intensively researched in the archives of Australia and New Zealand a nd is illustrated with colour and black and white photos. Sections cover the contributions from the Navy, Army and Air Force services from each of the three nations and how they were maintained by a single Support Group. There are also sections on sport, families and the lifestyle. |
