Abstract

Before the Australians had been exposed to active service in the First World War, being sent home to Australia in disgrace had been the most severe disciplinary action possible within the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). But repatriation - return to the home country - lost much of its force as punishment after the Pozieres offensive and the horrific loss of life on the Western Front.
