Abstract

Until September 1939, Tonga had no need of an army, Tonga's 34,000 inhabitants situated in three island groups located 1,600 km north-east of New Zealand and about 5,000 km south-west of Hawaii, were indeed the Friendly Isles - an idyllic backwater Pacific paradise. But in 1939, when Britain went to war with Germany, Queen Salote Tupou III declared that all of Tonga's resources were at Britain's disposal.
