Description

Poretta, Corsica, France. May 1944. Informal portrait of 408541 Flying Officer (FO) J. D. (Barney) Wallis of Bayswater, Vic, pilot with No. 451 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF operating from the Poretta Airfield. FO Wallis drew first blood for the squadron by shooting down a Messerschmitt BF109 aircraft on the first operation made by the squadron. Note the Supermarine Spitfire aircraft behind him.
