Description
A German SdKfz 9, 18 ton heavy halftrack, known as a FAMO. The vehicle has been abandoned after being attacked by allied fighter aircraft. These large haltracks were used as recovery vehicles and as heavy artillery tractors. Although of solid construction the vehicle is not armour plated. The soldiers inspecting the truck are probably with the New Zealanders during their encircling movements of the Mareth Line. During the Battle of El Hammam, a famous RAF Fighter Squadron and fighter bomber aircraft played a big part in breaking the enemy resistance. At one time the fires caused by these squadrons were so numerous that they could not be counted.
