Petty Officer George Ireland Woodgate
Description
Petty Officer George Ireland Woodgate enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 10 May 1932. He served on several bases and ships, including HMA Ships Cerberus, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Australia, Vampire, and Hobart. In May 1940, he transferred to HMAS Perth and served with this ship in the Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. On 1 March 1942, Petty Officer Woodgate was killed in action when HMAS Perth was sunk by Japanese torpedos in the Sunda Strait, Netherlands East Indies. He is commemorated at the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon, United Kingdom.
