Flight Sergeant Mervin John Smart
Description
Flight Sergeant Mervin John Smart enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 11 September 1941. He trained as a pilot in Western Australia, and travelled to the United Kingdom to complete his operational training. Flight Sergeant Smart went on to serve with 466 Squadron, based in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. With this unit, he participated in bombing operations against enemy-occupied Europe. On 31 August 1943, Flight Sergeant Smart was en route to his bombing target when his aircraft collided with another aircraft over Goole, Yorkshire. Both aircraft crashed, and both crews, including Flight Sergeant Smart, were killed. He is buried at Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery, Yorkshire.
