Private Joseph Theodore Sleep
Description
Private Joseph Theodore Sleep (6581, 5th Battalion) was born at Moonta Mines, SA, on 30 May 1900. He enlisted in Melbourne in July 1916 giving his occupation as labourer, although his brother later wrote that he was a tinsmith. Joseph claimed both parents were deceased and named his brother William as his next of kin, although his father was still living at the time. Joseph was killed in action near Bullecourt, France, on 10 May 1917 at the age of 16 years 11 months. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
