Private Alfred Edwards
Description
Private Alfred Edwards (156, 12th Battalion) was born in Bagdad, Tasmania. He was working as a labourer for a blacksmith in Bellerive, Tasmania, when he enlisted on 24 August 1914. Alfred received severe gunshot wounds to his left thigh at Lone Pine on 7 August 1915 and was transferred to No 3 Australian General Hospital, Mudros. He died on 12 August 1915 and was buried in the Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece. His father wrote that he was 17 years of age. Alfred’s brother, Private Walter Edwards, served with the 52nd Battalion and was wounded in France.
