Private Lionel Reginald Howarth
Description
Private Lionel Reginald Howarth (4399, 8th Field Ambulance) was born in Newtown, NSW. He was working as a horse driver for Nock and Kirby’s when he enlisted in October 1916. On 4 May 1918, Lionel was in an ambulance being driven by Private Wally Saunders along the Corbie Fulloy Road when a shell landed in front of the ambulance, killing them both. Lionel was buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, Daours, France. His foster mother wrote that he was 17 years old.
