Private Mathew Valentine Smith
Description
Private Mathew “Matty” Valentine Smith (3395, 34th Battalion) was born in Waterloo, NSW, in 1901. He was working as a driver when he enlisted in May 1917. Matty was killed in the front line near Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 4 April 1917 when a shell fell short and exploded in the trench his company was occupying. Matty is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. His mother wrote that he was 17 years of age.
