Private Darrell Lyle Washington
Description
Private Darrell Lyle Washington (3059, 31st Battalion) was born in East Devonport, Tasmania. He was trained in bookkeeping and was working as apprentice shipwright for his father. Darrell died on 26 October 1916 at the 36 Casualty Clearing Station as a result of wounds received earlier that day in the front line near Combles, France. His father wrote that he was 17 years one month of age at the time of his death. Darrell’s brother, Bombardier Audley Tennyson Washington, served with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade and his uncle, Gunner Frederick Washington, served with the 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group.
