Private Victor William Leach
Description
Private Victor William Leach (5050, 50th Battalion) was born in Carlton, Victoria, on 23 December 1900. He travelled to Adelaide, SA, in October 1917 and enlisted without his parents’ knowledge or consent under the alias of Leslie Lockingbar. Victor was killed near Vendelles, France, by shell fire on 13 September 1918 and is buried in the Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Jeancourt, France. His mother wrote later that he was 17 years and 9 months of age at the time of his death. Victor’s brother, Driver Ivan Imsie Leach, also served with the AIF.
