Private Royal Sharewood Mackey
Description
Private Royal Sharewood (Sherwood) Mackey (2204, 4th Battalion) was a blacksmith from Cooma, NSW. He enlisted in April 1915. Roy received gunshot wounds to his chest at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on 6 August 1915 and died of his wounds in Alexandria, Egypt, on 27 August 1915. He is buried in the Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt. Roy’s father later wrote that he was 17 years 9 months and 16 days of age at the time of this death. Roy’s brother, Lance Corporal Robert Nancarrow Mackey, served with the 54th Battalion and was wounded during the Second Battle of Bullecourt.
