Description

Clifford Alfred Walshe was born at Glebe, New South Wales, in 1892. Walshe was living in Bingara, New South Wales and working as a chauffeur before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces on 8 January 1916. He embarked on HMAT Marathon on 4 May 1916 as a member of the 33rd Infantry Battalion. During the journey, Walshe kept a detailed diary of his experiences on board the ship and places the ship visited.
Walshe disembarked on 9 July in the United Kingdom and spent four months training before being sent to the Western Front in France on 27 November 1916. The 33rd Battalion was involved in battles at Messines in June 1917 and Passchendaele in October 1917. In the spring of 1918 they defended Amiens around Villers-Bretonneux.
In the middle of August 1918, Walshe was admitted to hospital in England with pleurisy and spent the next two and a half months recovering.
Walshe arrived back in Australia on 22 March 1919 and was discharged on 8 May 1919. Clifford Alfred Walshe died in 1968 at Manly, New South Wales.
