Albert Edward Lucas was born at Forest Gate, Essex, in England in about 1895 to parents William and Annie, née Scutt . At the age of 16, he was living in Forest Gate and was employed as a clerk with a dairy company. Lucas was one of 8 children, with an older sister and brother, Ethel and William, two younger sisters, Florence and Irene, and three younger brothers, Joseph, Jack and Sidney. It is not known when he arrived in Australia.
He was 22 years old, living in Brisbane, and working as a barman when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 9 October 1916. Lucas married Matilda Frances Struthers on 20 November 1916, and embarked 5 days later with the 23rd reinforcements of the 15th Infantry Battalion, at Sydney on 25 November 1916, aboard HMAT Beltana. He joined the 15th Battalion in France on 12 June 1917 and also served with the battalion band as a tenor horn player. He returned to Australia aboard HMAT Euripides on 24 October 1919. After the war, he went back to Queensland and lived in various Brisbane suburbs before his death on 27 March 1960.
