Bruce Ernest Belmont was born on 16 August 1921 in Port Macquarie, NSW. He enlisted in the RAAF in June 1940 with service number 15354 and commenced training at No 8 Elementary Flying Training School at Narrandera, NSW. While at Narrandera, he deserted and fraudulently joined the AIF in April 1941. He was assigned service number NX5646 and spent time in the Middle East with 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion. After being 'discovered' in June 1943, he returned to the RAAF. Belmont was discharged as medically unfit for further service in August 1944.
Belmont again joined the Australian Army for the Korean War, assigned service number 41373 and served as a sergeant with 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment [2RAR] between 1953-1954.
Much later in life Belmont had one of his legs amputated due to shrapnel wounds, and died in a retirement village in Port Macquarie in 2006.
