Joseph Davis DePasse Joseph was born as David Joseph Joseph in Melbourne, the Victorian BDM index states his birth year as 1900. His parents were Leopold Edward Joseph, a bootmaker, and Sarah Elizabeth Hendrick. Their first child was Morris Cedric Clare Joseph, born 1891 he died 1971. A second child, Olga Bella Davis Joseph born 1895, she died 1896, their third child was David born 1900.
Joseph enlisted first as Joseph Joseph 24 July 1915 with the Service Number of 3547,
for reasons unknown he enlisted again 15 October 1915 this time with the Service Number of 1055. Joseph stood 5 feet 4 inches tall with fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair, his religion was Jewish. Joseph was allocated to A Company, 31st Battalion of the 8th Brigade arriving Suez 7 December 1915, then moved to Marseilles 23 June 1916.
During the battle of Fromelles Joseph was first listed as missing 20 July 1916, after a
Court of Enquiry 1 August 1917 Joseph was declared killed in action 20 July 1916. This was after a Private R Henry, Service Number 344 stated that on 19 July 1916 at 7.00pm Joseph was last seen about 400 yards over German lines. He was wounded in the foot and was crawling back towards the English lines. Joseph's father, Leopold filled out the Roll of Honour Circular stating that Joseph was aged sixteen when he was killed. The website for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission states that Joseph was aged 19 when he died.
Joseph's older brother Morris enlisted 9 Marsh 1916 with the Service Number of 6530,
he was allocated to the 58th Battalion. While in England Morris married Hannah Winifred Coleman 23 June 1918, he returned to Australia 11 January 1919 and settled down with his wife, Morris died in 1971.
