Gunner Eric Berthon
Eric Berthon was a Gunner in the 38th Battery, 10 Field Artillery, A.I.F. Born in 1897 at Brighton, Victoria, the son of Louis de Crillon and Mabel Berthon, he was educated at Haileybury College, Brighton. He had a brilliant scholastic career, obtaining honours in Latin and Greek and was head of the school and captain of cricket and football teams. He won a Resident Scholarship to Ormond College for 1916 and completed his first year in Arts for Law, gaining honours in classics.
Although Eric again won a Resident Scholarship for 1917, he joined the A.I.F. on 21 February 1917 and embarked on the Port Sydney from Melbourne on 9 November 1917. He took part in the allied offensive at Daours in August 1918 and was wounded at Busigny, in France. He died on 13 October 1918, a few weeks before his twenty first birthday. He was buried at the Serain Communal Cemetery, near Peronne.
