Lance Corporal Herbert Austin West
Description
Lance Corporal Herbert Austin West (5914, 20th Battalion) from Botany, NSW was working in a parcel room before he enlisted in August 1916. He was wounded in the second battle of Bullecourt (3 May) and promoted to Lance Corporal in June. He was wounded again on 6 October and died two days later. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. His mother later wrote that he had enlisted at the age of 14 years 8 months without the consent of his parents, and was 16 years 1 month at the time of his death. Herbert had two older brothers who both served in the AIF, Harry Walter West and Clifford Sydney West.
