Description

William Henry Goodfellow was born at Brisbane on 18 October 1892, the only child of parents William Henry Groves Goodfellow and Selina Litoney Goodfellow (née Otto).
Goodfellow served for a period of two and a half years in the Moreton Regiment (9th Battalion in 1913). At the time of his enlistment, he was employed as a packer.

Goodfellow enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane on 16 August 1916, using the name William Goodfellow. He was attached to the Special Reinforcements for the 2nd Australian General Hospital (AGH). He embarked from Brisbane for Melbourne aboard the troopship Kyarra on 16 August 1915 as a private. On 18 October, he embarked from Melbourne on the troopship Port Lincoln, and after arrival in Egypt was attached for duty at the Al-Hayat Convalescent Hospital at Helouan. On 29 March 1916, Goodfellow left Alexandria, Egypt, and arrived in Marseilles, France, on 3 April. He was attached to the 1st Casualty Clearing Station which was based near Estaires in northern France, west of Fleurbaix from May 1916 to May 1917. In May 1917 the unit relocated to Bailleul near the Belgian border during the battle for Messines ridge and relocated again in July 1917 near Hazebrouck, Belgium. In June 1918 the unit was moved south following the German advances in 1918. Goodfellow remained with his unit in France and Belgium until March 1919 with periods of leave in England during September 1917, Paris during January 1918 and England during October 1918.

On 8 March 1919, Goodfellow was admitted to the 3rd AGH in France with a fractured leg and contusion of the ankle as a result of an accident while on active duty. He was transferred to the Fulham Military Hospital in England, and then to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford on 26 March 1919 and discharged on 31 March. After a short period in April at the Australian Medical Corps Training Depot in England, Goodfellow embarked for Australia aboard the troopship Port Napier on 12 May 1919. He arrived in Australia on 4 July and was discharged on 28 August 1919.

During the voyage to Australia, Goodfellow participated in a concert held on 7 June 1919 by The Napierrots concert party, singing “When the great red dawn is shining”.

Goodfellow returned to Queensland after his discharge. In 1919, he is recorded as living at Newmarket, a suburb of Brisbane, and working as a storeman. On 10 January 1920, Goodfellow married Emilie Vera Leitch. In 1925, he had moved to another Brisbane suburb, Wilston, and in 1941 was living at Taringa in Brisbane. From about 1929 to 1949, Goodfellow worked as a commercial traveller. From 1954 to 1958, he is recorded as living at Southport, Queensland, and working as a salesman.

William Henry Goodfellow died in Queensland on 22 May 1961 at the age of 69.
