Description

Lieutenant Sydney Robert Traill, 1st Battalion Australian Imperial Force, was born in Burwood, N.S.W., in 1895 to Archibald and Mary Traill, one of nine children, 6 girls and 3 boys. He attended Newington College and was a clerk before enlisting on 28 August 1914. Wounded three times - at the landing at Anzac, at Pozieres on 24 July 1916 and in the Hazebrouck sector in April 1918 - he survived the war and was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre. Nine years after returning home, he died in Sydney on 28 October 1928 at the age of 33.
