Description

John Charles Kemp was a British serviceman, engaged during the First World War as 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal West Surrey Regiment, 6 Battalion (colloquially known as Kitchener’s Army). He won the Military Medal on 13 January 1916. On 16 June 1918 he was commissioned and transferred to 1 Battalion, Royal Wilshire Regiment. British Wiltshire units fought closely with Australian forces during the September 1918 push against the Hindenburg line. Kemp was wounded in action on 18 September 1918 in fighting near Equancourt, around 13 kilometres north of Peronne and 12 kilometres south east of Bapaume. For his gallantry on the day he was awarded the Military Cross.

Kemp migrated to Australia in 1924.
