Air Commodore Arthur Edward Mather
Arthur Edward Mather enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 16 September 1940. He undertook flying training in Australia, and graduated as a pilot in May 1941. Mather went on to serve with Bomber Command in the United Kingdom and the Desert Air Force in the Middle East and North Africa. On 22 January 1943, Mather was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for numerous operational sorties against German forces, including one occasion in which he completed a bombing operation on Tobruk from a height of only 2000 feet. He also showed great efficiency and determination. Between 1943 and 1945, Mather served as a flight instructor in Australia, and as part of 33 Squadron in New Guinea. In 1947, he received a permanent commission in the Royal Australian Air Force. He performed duties within the Department of Air, and received the Air Efficiency Award and the Air Force Cross in the course of his career. Arthur Edward Mather retired on 3 May 1973, holding the rank of Air Commodore.
