Major John Fletcher Connell
Description
Major John Fletcher Connell enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 1 March 1940. He served as a doctor with the Australian Army Service Corps in the United Kingdom and the Middle East before being sent to New Guinea in September 1942. While in New Guinea, Major Connell served on the Kokoda Trail, treating soldiers who had been wounded. He was awarded a Military Cross for his work on 22 October 1942 at Eora Creek, when he continuously treated the wounded in the midst of enemy fire, while being slightly wounded himself. Major Connell continued his service in New Guinea, Australia and the Netherlands East Indies, and was discharged on 7 May 1946.
