Private Roy Leslie Smith
Description
Private Roy Leslie Smith (1971, 59th Battalion) was born in Darlinghurst, Sydney, NSW on 27 October 1899. He was working as a dairy hand when he enlisted in January 1916. Roy was killed in action at Needle Trench near Gueudecourt during a heavy enemy artillery barrage on 14 December 1916, only 2 weeks after joining his battalion. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France. He was 17 years 2 months of age.
