Private Walter Mitchell
Description
Private Walter Mitchell (589, 35th Battalion) was born in West Maitland, NSW around May of 1900. He was working a labourer when he enlisted in december 1915. Walter was posted as missing in action 12 October 1917. A court of enquiry seven months later determined that he had been killed in action during the battle of Passchendaele. Walter has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He was 17 years 5 months of age at the time of his death. Walter's brother, Private John Joseph Mitchell (1180) served with the 53rd Battalion.
