The Centaur was sunk without warning by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine 50 miles north east of Brisbane. Savage was one of the 64 survivors and the only nursing sister to survive the attack. After jumping overboard the suction of the sinking Centaur dragged Sister Savage down into a whirlpool of moving metal and wood.
