A large group of soldiers grouped informally, on the wharf prior to their embarkation on the troopship HMAT Ascanius (A11) which embarked from Melbourne on 27 May 1916. Possible identifications are: 273 Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) William Thomas Brough, 37, Police Constable from Fitzroy, Vic; 420 Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Alexander Norman Comrie, of Malvern, Vic; 1171 CSM WO2 Vaughan James Crotty, of Albert Park, Vic; 142 CSM WO2 Wallace Gordon Jewkes, a chemist of Ballarat, Vic, (died of wounds on 10 January 1917, in France); 781 CSM WO2 Stanley Lefevre, of Ashburton, Vic, all of whom embarked with 10th Infantry Brigade, 39th Infantry Battalion; R847 Battery Sergeant Major (BSM) William Moon, of West Footscray, Vic who embarked with 2nd Field Artillery Brigade (2FAB) 17th Reinforcements.
