Josiah Barnes collection of First World War negatives and prints
Members of the 24th Reinforcements, 7th Battalion prior to boarding HMAT Ballarat (A70) from Melbourne. The sign in the left background says 'Danger Beware of Trains'. In the third row from the front , first right, wearing glasses, is 7219 Private (Pte) Major Singleton Cole, of Wangaaratang, Victoria . Next to him with his kitbag in front of his feet is 7299 Pte George James Prior, of Moonee Ponds, Vic. In the centre of the front row of the three men crouching is an unidentified Staff Sergeant. In the second row from front, left to right are: Sergeant; Sergeant; Corporal; Sergeant; Sergeant; Sergeant; Private. On the embarkation roll there are six acting sergeants and six acting corporals listed. Of the acting sergeants listed 7340 Pte Clifford Davies Williams, of Tarnagulla, Vic was killed in action on 1 October 1917 in Belgium; and 7342 Pte George Alfred Yung, of Happy Valley, Vic was also killed in action on 20 September 1917 in Belgium.
