Description
Popular resort since ca. 1810, when town grew around residence of Dorset squire, Lewis Tregonwell; expanded with railways 1870; called "Sandbourne" in Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles; includes large residential areas & some light industry.
