Bassingbourn
Description
Bassingbourn airfield, in Cambridgeshire in south-eastern England, was opened as a Royal Air Force (RAF) bomber station in March 1938, and remained under RAF control until October 1942 when it was taken over by the United States 8th Air Force. The famous B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" operated from Bassingbourn as part of the 324th Bombardment Squadron of the 91st Bombardment Group. Control of the airfield returned to the RAF in June 1945, and it remained operational until closed in May 1969.
