Description
Taken by Poles in 1340; passed to Austrians 1772; given back to Poland in 1919; between 1919 and 1939, it was part of the Second Polish Republic and called Lwow; during the Second World War the city was captured by both the Soviet Union in 1939 and then Germany; in 1946, it became part of the Soviet Union and was called L'vov; in 1991 it became part of the independent Ukraine and is now called Lviv.
The city has various names in different languages and appears to had these names simultaneously depending on what language you spoke.
