Description

Located near Maitland, in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, the Rutherford area was first used for training by the citizens force in the years prior to the First World War. It remained in use through the inter-war period and during the Second World War was used for the training of both AIF and militia troops. Rutherford Camp is remembered for its spartan facilities, most of the troops were accommodated in tents, climatic extremes, flies and the bare dusty plain upon which it stood. Usage of Rutherford declined after the war and the camp area was gradually sold off to be resumed as grazing land throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s.
