Description

Town was always officially known as Marree. Hergott Springs was the name given to the railway station and telegraph office. Name was derived from the adjacent Herrgott Springs (sprg). Corrupted from D D Herrgolt, a German botanist and collector in B H Babbage's exploration party.
Town surveyed in October 1883. Previously but unofficially known as Hergott Springs. Meaning as recorded by N Tindale, vide history books Vol 19 Folio 25. Railway station & telegraph station called "Hergott Springs" before the town was surveyed and named. Name strengthened by the Nomenclature Committee during the move to alter "names of enemy origin" in 1916. The original name of the springs at Marree is marina or mari. In ancient times an ancestral being of the tirari tribe, named papapapana, discovered the springs & observed many tracks of possums leading to it. The stress accent falls on the first syllable as in marina & not on the second as would be conventional to us - information supplied by Professor Norman Tindale. Locality boundary established to incorporate "suburban areas to" & "adjacent areas to" Marree. Incorporates the Government Town of Maree. Unincorporated land added to Marree vide Government Gazette of 26 April 2013.
