Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Surgeon-Lieutenant Arthur Charles Robert Todd, born in Sydney on 23 June 1889. He enlisted in 1914, was appointed Surgeon-on-Probation on 17 August 1914 and was transferred to HMAS Sydney on 25 October 1914. He remained with HMAS Sydney until 10 June 1916 and was placed on the retired list on 30 November 1917.
Collection consists of: a photocopy of an 85 page typescript manuscript by Surgeon-Lieutenant Todd, titled 'Cruise of HMAS Sydney 1914-1916', written for the Australian Official History of the War [the original manuscript is believed to be held by the Mitchell Library, Sydney]; three photographs of drawings of HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden, two of which are signed 'Leo Quick, 1917'; a duplicated letter from Captain John Glossop, Department of the Navy, dated 8 October 1918, written to accompany a souvenir Mexican silver dollar salvaged from SMS Emden. The Mexican silver dollar is held in the collection at REL31589.
