Hine, William Lionel 'Leo' (Sergeant, b.1890 - d.1916)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 175 Sergeant William Lionel 'Leo' Hine, 21 Battalion. Collection consists of an original typed copy of a diary covering his embarkation from Australia in May 1915; the voyage to Egypt including a stop in Colombo; training and sightseeing in Egypt; the voyage to Gallipoli in September 1915 including his ship being torpedoed by a German submarine; his time there and the evacuation in December; return to Egypt; voyage to France in March 1916; training and fighting while there; march into Belgium in July and fighting there; the last diary entry is on 24 August 1916, the day he died. Also included is a short summary of the first few weeks in Gallipoli; some notes on trenches; and the toll of explosives on the soldiers.
