Description
Collection relating to 7884 Stoker Niels Peter Henry "Chook" Nielsen. Collection comprises an original four page handwritten letter dated 16 November 1914 sent by Stoker Nielsen to his parents, whilst he was aboard the HMAS Sydney in Colombo in which he writes about the action that took place between the Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney and German cruiser SMS Emden in the Indian Ocean on 9 November 1914; a letter/report titled 'Sydney v Emden' written by Nielsen to the Royal Australian Navy in 1925 about the lead up to the encounter and details of the ships in the first convoy of Australian and New Zealand troops to Egypt. Also included are typed transcripts of both letters.
