Embroidered souvenir of Egypt with photograph : Sergeant R P Mills, 26 Battalion AIF
Pink sateen embroidered souvenir of Egypt 1916. 'Souvenir of Egypt' has been embroidered at the top above a crown. In the middle is a rectangular padded cloth frame which contains a postcard photograph of Private Mills. The photograph is flanked on both sides with flags. On the proper right are the flags for Belgium, Russia and United Kingdom. On the proper left are the flags for France, Italy (the green cotton is very pale) and Egypt. Beneath the photograph is embroidered '1916'.
Associated with 5075 Private Reginald Percy Mills, 26 Battalion AIF. Born at Leicester, England. Enlisted at Brisbane, aged twenty years, on 25 January 1916. Mills embarked for overseas service with 26 Battalion in HMAT Seang Choon on 4 May 1916. On 22 March 1917 he was wounded in action. Mills was appointed lance corporal in June 1917 and was sent to bomb school a month later. He was promoted to corporal in November while serving in Belgium and then to sergeant while serving in France on 15 August 1918. Mills was wounded a second time with a gun shot wound to his left leg. At the end of the war was attached to AIF Headquarters. Mills left England to returned to Australia on 8 October 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on 21 January 1920.
