Painted coconut, representing General Tojo, made for a Christmas present : Private J Greenberg, 2/6 Field Ambulance
Description
Painted souvenir coconut representing Tojo, the Japanese General. One side only of the nut is painted. Tojo's cap is painted yellow with a black peak and has a red disc in the centre, together with words painted in black, 'GREETINGS HON. KEN! From Joe in NEW GUINEA XMAS 43'. Tojo's face is outlined and partly filled in in black paint. He wears glasses; his mouth is red and his broken teeth yellow. The back of the nut bears the maker's service number in black paint 'VX122387'.
History / Summary
Made by VX122387 Private Joseph Greenberg, who served with B Company, 2/6 Field Ambulance. Born in 1923, he enlisted in December 1942 and was discharged in September 1945. At the time of his enlistment he was studying graphic art and painting at Swinburne, which he resumed after his discharge. During his service in New Guinea and New Britain he provided cartoons for 'Salt', the 6th Brigade newspaper, and for 'Khaki and Green', the Army Christmas Book.
