Navigator's Brevet : Royal Australian Air Force
Description
Navigator's wing (brevet) of the pattern worn by RAAF aircrew during the period 1948 - 1953. The brevet is machine embroidered in white and light blue cotton on a navy blue felt backing. It features the letter 'N' within a light blue wreath surmounted by the King's crown. An outstretched white wing extends from the wreath's left hand side.
History / Summary
This pattern of brevet, introduced in 1948, marked the first time that Australian non-pilot wings had featured the crown of the monarch (then King George VI). The five types of aircrew brevet approved for wear at this time were: Pilot ('RAAF'), Navigator ('N'), Flight Engineer ('E'), Gunner ('G') and Signaller ('S').
