Description

Khaki cotton webbing waist belt with fifty individual ammunition loops. The belt is fastened by a pressed brass sliding clip impressed with the letters 'S A'. Scratched on the reverse of the clasp are the initials 'H.C.B.' Makers' markings impressed on the brass fittings read 'ANSON MILLS, PAT. FEB 1.1881. T.C. ORNDORFF SOLE MANF. WORCESTER MASS. U.S.A.' and 'PAT. MILLS& ORNDORFF AUG. 26:67 JULY 31:77 DEC. 28:80 MAR. 19:89 OCT. 31:93 SEPT. 11:94'.

This type of ammunition belt is of the type used by the four South Australian Contingents in South Africa during the Boer War. It was designed and manufactured in the United States, and was the forerunner of the webbing equipment used during the First World War.
