Sign : British notice board, 'Chateau Wood Road'
Description
British notice board sign for 'Chateau Wood Road' with grid reference from a trench map (most likely Sheet 28). A small plaque has been attached to the sign underneath the word 'Wood' which reads: 'Notice Board collected From Ypres Battlefield. By Sgt. W Brown VC DCM. Pte. W Wise and Pte B Kent. For 20th Battalion War Museum'.
History / Summary
The sign was erected near Menin Road, where Chateau Wood was turned to muddly desolation during the fighting in 1917. A small plaque on the sign records that Sergeant Wally Brown, who would win the Victoria Cross in 1918, was among those who later recovered it.
