Medical officer's jacket : Marine Stabsarzt Bornstein, Kaiserliche Marine
German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) medical officer's dark blue wool superfine evening jacket. The double breasted jacket has a blue silk velvet turn back collar. There are two vertical rows of six gilded brass German Imperial Navy buttons down the front. The first and second buttons on the right side and first and sixth buttons on the left side are missing. There is a welt pocket let into the right breast and two inset pockets with plain flaps over each front hip. Around both sleeves, 120mm above the plain cuffs, there are two bands of gold bullion lace set on a wider band of blue silk velvet. This is the rank and branch colour of a ship's medical officer (marine stabsarzt). The body of the jacket is lined with black polished cotton and the sleeves with cream. A maker's label is sewn onto the inside of the pocket, which has been let into the lining of the right breast. The label also gives the wearer's name and a year of manufacture.
